Our History
We have engaged in the research of bone and soft tissue tumor treatment since 1956. In the 1950s, we firstly used bone allografts in treatment of bone tumors in China. We focus exclusively on bone and soft tumors since 1977. Through these years, our team has grown from a single team to a large professional center. In the 1970s, we carried out the first sacrum tumor resection surgery in China and won the national medical prize for this great innovation. In the 1980s, we firstly invented the technology of alcohol inactivated autogenous bone replantation, which was widely used in China in that certain peroid and many patients got cured from this technique.

In 2005, professor Xiaohui Niu was elected as the professor of our department, who has been bringing the most amazing progress in the history of our center until now. There are many experts in our department, including three chief physicians, five associate chief physicians, three members of ISOLS and professor Niu Xiaohui, the president of the Osteosarcoma committee of Chinese Society of Clinical Oncolgy (CSCO). Prof.niu is also the vice president of Chinese Medical Association Orthopaedic Chapter Bone Tumor Group and the vice-leader of Chinese Anti-Cancer Association Sarcoma Group. This is the only one center in China where so many orthopaedic oncoloy experts are working together, and consultation of these experts guarded both the accuracy of diagnosis and adequacy of therapy. In 2005, we reported the long term results of comprehensive therapy for primary osteosarcoma in extrimities of 189 cases, which was the first large-sample report of osteosarcoma in China. It analyzed the materials of the long-term follow-up for these patients, including chemotherapy, amputation therapy and limb-sparing therapy, and all the results were consistent with the outcomes from other famous international centers, meaning that the diagnosis and therapy level of osteosarcoma in our department had reached an international advanced standards. In 2005, professor Niu and professor Tian Wei cooperated in the development of the Computer Assisted Navigation System in spine tumor surgery, providing a more advanced method for the therapy of spine tumor. In 2007, professor Niu participated the writing of “Chinese Expert Consensus Statement on Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment of Malignant Tumor Bone Metastasis and Bone Related Diseases”, which was under the leader of CSCO, representing the knowledge quintessence of many experts and guiding the diagnosis and therapy of bone metastasis. In recent years, along with the development of medical technique, a series of new technologies was explored in our center, for example, microwave and radio frequency skill cooperating with Computer Assisted Navigation System ensured the safety of surgical margin, ultrasonic scalpel has also made the resection of soft tissue sarcomas more easier and clearer, and the application of argon beam coagulator in surgery can reduce the recurrence rate of aggressive tumors.
After more than 50 years of development, Orthopaedic Oncology Surgery Department of Beijing Ji Shui Tan hospital has become the largest bone tumor center in China, and is developing toward the one of the best clinical center of bone tumors in the Asian-Pacific region, even in the whole world.
